Why?TimeSometimes, when we describe to people how we trained our kitties, the reaction will be: "I wouldn't have time for that." or "You guys must have a lot of spare time." The fact is that part of the reason we are doing this to save time. We plan to have our kitties around for maybe 15 years. If you add up all the time spent scooping and disposing of litter, over 15 years, that's a lot more time than we are going to spend on that. With trial and a lot of errors it took us about 6 months to train Solomon. I bet we could now do it in three. -and it's not like we are actively working on it 24/7. Because we only have one toilet, Solmon ended up getting reverted back a to the start, when we got Ayla and started to train her. She seemed to pick it up pretty fast, though. I suspect it is because she learned some from Solomon. SpaceWe live in a small condo. There isn't really any extra space that we don't use for living. -not much room to get the kind of litter box that is less likely to have a bad odor. If you don't have a basement or some other area, you pretty much have to remove and take the clumps outside at least daily. Even if you can't detect the odor, your cat can. CleanlinessWe don't have litter on the floor/carpet that the cats tracked or pulled out of the box. We don't have feces, and the organisms that grow in it, lying around. We also find that our toilet is cleaner than the average. Just as some cats won't share a litter box, Ayla seems to notice if Solomon or one of us has used the toilet. A cat's sense of smell is many times better than ours, so it would not be surprizing if Ayla would be able to notice even if we just sat on the seat. So we've gotten into the habit of spraying some 70% alcohol on toilet tissue and wiping the top and bottom of the seat as well as the rim after we or they use the toilet. If you look at a white tissue that you've just used to wipe your seat and rim, you might see what you've been missing in your cleaning. |
