Platform

If you have cut wide enough, the template ought to be able to slide back past the hinges and towards the tank. With the edge of the template parallel with and almost against the tank, put the toilet seat down. Now trace the inside of the seat with a dashed line that will be used as a guide, but not actually be cut out. You can also trace the outside of the seat with a solid line, as far as shown below. The second picture shows what you should end up with after this.

Next it's time to set how small your opening will go. With the seat down, pull the template forward until only about 1/4 to 1/3 of the area inside the dashed line is visible inside the seat. If you want to be able to completely close the opening with the platform, pull it until no more area is showing. Now use the front, inside of the seat to trace an arc that goes back at least to the point where the ends are wider than the outside of your original flap cutout. Of course if your hinges are wider than the opening, this won't be possible. In that case, the best you can do is to go as wide as possible. It should end up looking like the second picture below.

Now draw some straight lines from your arcs to the edge of the template. A folder makes a good straight-edge that already has a built-in 90 degree angle, to keep things square. Use this to trace a straight line from the outer arc, back to and perpendicular with the back template edge. The lines that meet the inner arc are already started. These are the first cuts you made. Use these cuts as a guide to make lines that meet the second arc. See below.

Cut out your template and see how it fits. Make extra cuts or notes on where to leave more material. Use this to trace a cutting line on your platform material. Then cut it out.

Remember to not cut any dashed lines.
