Background

Friends, relatives, and discussion-group visitors have often asked us about how we trained our two cats to use the toilet (and flush). This is the site we promised some people in the CatsT-Training Group a while back. Welcome! It's good to see many of you have tried similar strategies to what Solomon was using when he was the Featured Cat in November 2003. CatsT-Training Group is a good one to join, if you want to exchange training experiences with others. -and to see some cute pictures of Solmon and Ayla in the "Graduates" section.

Many people have successfully potty trained their cats. If you do a search I'm sure you'll find lots of sources of information on the web. We took some general information from the web but have mainly worked it out ourselves by trial and error. A lot of the stuff out there told us things we already knew or suspected like 'cat's are very habitual' and 'you must go very gradually and incrementally.' Many of the devices were too elaborate, or too expensive, or too flimsy, or too permanent, or weren't modular enough, or didn't give you the option of ending up with no devices at the end of training.. We've been told that we could somehow make money off of this. Rather than waste time and energy on developing a commercial version and trying to convince you how the system is "completely different" than anyone else's and incorporate security measures to stop those who haven't paid, or tie this site to advertisers that may not have our best interests in mind, I'm going to go about it a different way. I'm going to just give it out. I'll tell you exactly what the main devices and techniques are and let you decide what it is worth to you.

This did take some time, so please consider donating if this has saved you time, money, or other resources. I've tried or made devices similar to those currently on the market. None have worked better than this, in terms of effectiveness, durability, and ease of cleaning.

We'd really appreciate a small donation (<$10)

Overview/Index

We start with a litter-box on top of the toilet and end with a platform between the seat and rim. The progression, more or less, follows this sequence:

  • Litterbox secured to top of toilet with bungy.
  • Litter-filled mixing bowl and platform, under toilet seat (supported by rim).
  • Platform; gradually moved back to reduce access to litter.
  • Swap mixing bowl with retractable litter-bowl device.
( Try to retract bowl after your kitty starts to potty.)
  • Reduce amount of litter in bowl
  • Expose water/reduce exposed litter.
  • Remove retractable litter bowl device.

The above steps may have to be repeated or modified. There are also some additional steps that might be added.
